As our pets grow older, there are some conditions that are more common than others. All pets are different but here are some of the regular issues you may find your pet suffering from....
Dental issues - You may notice that your dog has smelly breath, trying to rub or paw their mouth and difficulty in chewing food. You should try to brush your pets teeth every day with a dog specific toothpaste. Dental specific chews are also good to keep teeth clean. If you're concerned about your dogs teeth, then please book an appointment with your vet who can examine your pets teeth thoroughly under anesthetic. They may even conduct a thorough cleaning and remove any teeth if necessary
Arthritis - The majority of dogs will get arthritis as they become old, particularly larger breeds. You may notice their legs become stiff, limping, unwillingness to exercise and signs of pain. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight will help but some owners find that a joint supplement helps their pets. If you feel that your pet needs some further assistance, your regular vet may decide to prescribe some anti-inflamatory drugs or even suggest a referral for physiotherapy
Dementia - Just like humans, our pets can also develop Dementia in their old age. They may change their sleep cycle; becoming awake and restless through the night but sleeping in the day. They may become more clingy to you and develop separation anxiety or you may notice them pacing and possibly seeming disoriented/getting stuck in places. Even though there is no cure for dementia, if you're worried about symptoms of dementia then it would be worth visiting your vet to rule out any other conditions
